Inspired by Nature

The garden is one of my greatest teachers. It’s where I slow down, observe, and reconnect. Every plant, petal, and branch holds inspiration. I often find myself recreating what I’ve seen outdoors, a curling vine, the surface of a seed pod, or the shape of a flower just before it fades. My connection to gardens started early. My mother loved plants, and I enjoy time spent in my grandmother’s backyard while growing up in Jamaica, surrounded by texture and growth. Those memories helped shape the way I see the world. Today, when I travel, I’m as drawn to gardens and green spaces as I am to landmarks. You’ll find traces of that influence in the forms I make. A bud-like vase. A petal-shaped rim. Soft carvings that mirror light passing through leaves. These ideas come from lived moments and often show up naturally as I work with the clay. Both gardens and working with clay, remind me that beauty exists in both order and wildness, in both growth and letting go. I try to carry that lesson into each piece. Through my ceramics, I hope to share a bit of that feeling, like the calm that comes from walking through a garden or noticing the small wonders of the natural world.

Tracey-Ann Jarrett-Pena

I´m Tracey-Ann Jarrett, the artist behind The Afro Potter. Born in Jamaica and now based in Georgia, I create hand-built stoneware ceramics inspired by the natural world. My work is guided by a philosophy I call FloraSentimentalism™, an emotional and moral bond with plant life that honors the beauty of small, often overlooked moments. Before clay, there was nature photography. I’ve always been drawn to small details, to the things most people miss. That same eye now shapes my ceramics, where organic textures, subtle curves, and botanical forms come together in pieces that are both sculptural and functional. Each piece I make carries the memory of touch, time, and care. They are shaped slowly, grounded in intention, and made to reconnect us with the natural world.
