Elegant stoneware designed to serve beautifully and live effortlessly in any space....
Born in Jamaica, I am a self-taught ceramic artist working under the name The Afro Potter. The nickname began as a lighthearted joke. My husband started calling me “the Afro potter” because of my natural hairstyle and my growing obsession with clay. When I was invited to show and sell my work for the first time, we decided to embrace it as a business name. What started playfully turned out to be surprisingly fitting: it reflects not just my appearance but also the organic, nature-rooted spirit that defines my work.
My creative journey began in my mother’s garden, where I first fell in love with the textures, colors, and quiet rhythms of the natural world. That connection has never left me. Though I originally trained as a photographer, I was always drawn to small, subtle details; things that often go unnoticed. Eventually, photography gave way to clay, a transition that felt both grounding and intuitive.
My ceramics are not political, nor do they aim to make a grand statement. Instead, they are a quiet celebration of nature’s beauty. Inspired by gardens, wild places, and the whimsy found in the tiniest details, my work is rooted in a deep personal connection to the earth. I create each piece to feel like a little piece of nature you can hold, use, and keep close to home.
Working primarily by hand with white stoneware, I use the pinch pot method along with carving, piercing, and organic textures to bring softness, movement, and a sense of play to each form. The result is functional pottery that feels joyful and alive; pieces that often make people smile. At a recent pop-up, someone said, “This isn’t pottery, this is art.” That sentiment captures my goal: to make work that brings beauty, comfort, and a sense of wonder into everyday life.
Though my path in ceramics hasn’t been traditional, I’ve pursued it with curiosity and persistence; learning through online resources, books, and hands-on experimentation in my tiny home studio in North Georgia. My work has been shown in juried exhibitions including SIP: A Ceramic Cup Show (Savannah Clay Community), The Banquet at Ology Gallery (Savannah, GA), and ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival. In 2024, my garden pitcher won Best in Show at The Banquet, and I received the Miss Congeniality award at The Cup Show hosted by Mingo Makes It.
Whether sitting quietly on a shelf or in daily use, I hope my ceramics feel like a gentle invitation; to slow down, to notice, and to connect with the natural world, even in the smallest moments.
